About this album
The Great Mahalia Jackson is a strong overview of gospel’s defining voice, Mahalia Jackson. This 1972 compilation brings together some of her best-known spiritual performances, underlining the emotional authority, control and warmth that made her one of the most important singers in American music. Jackson helped carry gospel beyond church walls into the wider cultural mainstream, and her interpretations of songs such as ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and ‘Just A Closer Walk With Thee’ show why her singing remains so commanding. With its mix of faith, consolation and uplift, the collection reflects a voice that influenced generations of gospel, soul and popular singers.
