Magazine – Play (VG+/VG+) – LP, AU 1980

Play is an LP by Magazine from 1980 released on the Virgin label.

About this album

Play is one of Magazine’s most distinctive statements, sharpening the band’s post-punk intelligence into a taut, uneasy new wave album. Released in 1980, it followed their acclaimed run of late-’70s records and continued Howard Devoto’s move away from punk orthodoxy towards colder, more intricate songwriting. The album pairs jagged guitars and restless rhythm work with Devoto’s detached, literate delivery, giving songs such as A Song From Under the Floorboards and The Light Pours Out Of Me lasting force. Its mix of nervous energy, melodic bite and art-rock ambition helped secure Magazine’s reputation as one of the era’s most distinctive British bands.
