Shades of Blue is Madlib’s inspired Blue Note tribute, one of the key albums in his early 2000s run. Released in 2003, it reworks jazz history through dusty samples, loose grooves and instrumental hip-hop textures, turning source material from the Blue Note catalogue into something vivid and contemporary. The album’s blend of downtempo beats, jazzy swing and collage-like sequencing helped strengthen the bridge between underground hip-hop and jazz reissue culture.
