In 1979, Neil Fraser (aka Mad Professor) founded Ariwa Sounds, the oldest and one of the most influential independent reggae studios and labels in the United Kingdom. What began modestly in the living room of Neil’s apartment in South London with homemade 4-track equipment evolved into a label that released over 300 albums, including works by some of the most influential and legendary artists of their time in the genres of reggae, dub, and lovers rock.
This 15-track compilation showcases the label’s body of work spanning 45 years, featuring some of the label’s greatest singers: It showcases the influences of Motown and Stax on Lovers Rock, while also offering a glimpse into the label’s dub-infused, experimental side and highlighting Ariwa’s commitment to quality, as well as its personality, philosophy, and sense of humor. It is not a “Best of Ariwa,” but rather a diverse and authentic tribute to the label from the perspective of Melodies International, mastered by Frank Merritt (The Carvery) from the original tapes.
