Faces is Mac Miller at his most ambitious and exposed, a sprawling mixtape that pushed his sound far beyond early mainstream rap. Arriving in 2014, it blends smoky jazz-rap, cloud rap and inward-looking lyricism into a restless, two-hour statement on fame, addiction, mortality and self-doubt. Largely self-produced under the alias Larry Fisherman, Miller treats the record like a living notebook, moving from woozy grooves to stark confessions with striking freedom. Now widely regarded as one of his defining works, Faces helped cement his reputation as a serious, adventurous songwriter and producer.
