Second Helping cemented Lynyrd Skynyrd’s place as one of Southern rock’s defining bands. Released in 1974, the album built on the momentum of their debut with tougher riffs, sharper hooks and a stronger sense of identity, while also widening their audience far beyond the American South. “Sweet Home Alabama” became the group’s signature song and one of rock’s most recognisable answers to cultural criticism, while tracks such as “Workin’ for MCA” and “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” showed their range between swagger, humour and blues-tinged storytelling. A key statement of the genre, it helped make Lynyrd Skynyrd arena-sized stars.
