  • Spooky is Lush's 1990 debut studio album. A key text for British indie music at the turn of a decade, it was produced by label mate Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and features the singles 'Nothing Natural', 'For Love' and 'Superblast!'.

Spooky is one of those records that feels soft around the edges but is actually built with a lot of control underneath. The guitars blur and bloom in that classic early-’90s shoegaze way, but what really gives the album its staying power is the interplay between Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson. Their voices don’t just float above the music, they shape it, pulling the songs toward pop structure even when Robin Guthrie’s production wraps everything in mist. Tracks like For Love, Nothing Natural and Untogether show how tuneful and emotionally direct Lush could be without giving up the dreamlike atmosphere that made them stand apart.

What makes Spooky so rewarding is that it is not just a wash of pretty sound. Beneath the shimmer there is tension, melody and a slightly strange harmonic feel that keeps the album from becoming background music. It sits in that sweet spot between shoegaze, dream pop and jangly alternative pop, with a real sense of movement from song to song. Even now it sounds youthful in the best way: romantic, slightly unruly and full of ideas, but confident enough to turn all that texture into songs you can actually remember.
