About this album

Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic give Beethoven’s First and Second Symphonies a poised, disciplined reading that helped define mid-century orchestral style. Recorded in 1963, the performance combines smooth string sonority, taut phrasing and classical balance with the grandeur associated with Karajan’s Beethoven cycle. These early symphonies, still rooted in Haydn and Mozart yet already expanding symphonic scale and drama, gain extra clarity and momentum here. The result is a refined, authoritative account from one of the great conductor-orchestra partnerships of the 20th century, prized for its polish and architectural control.
