Low – Secret Name (2xLP)

Low's Secret Name arrived in 1999 as the Minnesota trio's fourth full-length and an early peak in the band's Kranky years. It was the first of two albums Low made with Steve Albini, whose direct, natural recording style suits Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Zak Sally's patient, understated music especially well. Rather than abandoning the group's spare foundation, the record widens it with strings, piano and timpani, giving these songs a fuller, chamber-pop edge without losing their quiet intensity.
