The Lounge Lizards is a striking debut that helped define the band’s sly, downtown take on avant-garde jazz. Released in 1981, it blends jazz fluency with no wave bite, dry humour and New York art-scene swagger, setting the group apart from both traditional jazz and punk-era experimentation. Led by saxophonist John Lurie, the ensemble turned standards and originals into something tense, witty and restless, with the kind of clipped energy that made the band a fixture in the city’s early-1980s underground. Its reputation grew as one of the era’s most distinctive crossover statements.
