Little Milton's We're Gonna Make It captures the moment James Milton Campbell turned his Chess-era rise into a genuine breakthrough. Released in 1965, it grew out of his move to Checker after years on the regional circuit, and its title song carried an optimism widely understood as resonating with the civil rights movement. That single topped the R&B chart and crossed over to the pop charts, giving Milton his biggest early-career hit and helping define him as a major soul-blues voice.
What makes the album stick is the way Milton brings blues grit and soul polish together without sounding pulled in two directions. His singing has real control and warmth, while the arrangements add horns, a firm rhythm section, and occasional orchestral touches that broaden the sound without blunting his guitar playing. Songs like “Who’s Cheating Who?,” “Blind Man,” and the title track show why this set reached a wider audience than his earlier work.
It also marks an important point in the Chess story. Compared with labelmates rooted more squarely in Chicago blues, Little Milton brought a more crossover-ready blend of electric blues and Southern soul, often compared to B.B. King but very much his own in phrasing and feel. This edition returns the album through the Chess/Acoustic Sounds program, which suits a record that helped establish Milton as one of the leading figures in soul-blues.
