Leon Russell is a vivid debut that announced him as a singular songwriter, pianist and bandleader. Released in 1970, the album blends rock, soul, blues and Southern boogie with a looseness that still feels fresh, shifting easily from the aching title track A Song for You to the swagger of Delta Lady and the gospel-tinged Lift. Drawing on the Muscles Shoals and Los Angeles worlds around him, Russell’s writing and piano playing give the record its gritty, melodic core. Widely regarded as one of his essential albums, it helped define his early solo identity and influence the era’s rootsier rock sound.
