Leon Bridges releases with "Coming Home" his debut album of 10 songs. The fact that a year and a half ago he was still making ends meet with a job as a dishwasher sounds like something out of a fairy tale.
Leon Bridges' great love was actually dancing and so he first trained as a choreographer. He could sing, but he had no self-confidence. During his time in high school he tried his hand at the then current R'n'B. It was only through the repeatedly asked question whether Sam Cooke was his role model that he began to occupy himself with the soul music of the 1950s and 1960s.
Fort Worth (Texas) is considered the "City of Cowboys". Around his hometown Leon Bridges repeatedly performed at various "Open Mic" evenings. Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block, who usually play blues-inspired alternative rock with their band White Denim, were able to persuade him to come to their studio after such a gig. With the old, analog studio equipment a handmade sound was developed, which, together with Bridges vocals, results in a perfect retro sound.
During the three-day session, the recordings were made which were to attract a lot of attention and now form the basis for the album "Coming Home". The Texas music blog Gorilla vs. Bear reported about Leon Bridges and introduced two of his songs. After millions of clicks on numerous music platforms and according to reports from Q, New Musical Express or BBC, the visit of the label representatives was not long in coming.
Leon Bridges' debut is now released on Columbia/Sony Music. The cover artwork of "Coming Home", the photos and also the video clips are staged in captivating black-and-white aesthetics with great attention to detail and only on closer inspection can one guess that the photos are not from the fifties or sixties
There have always been soulless singers. Leon Bridges distinguishes himself by not underlining his vocals on "Coming Home" with cool dance beats. With handmade music, Bridges achieves a perfect sound, which is deeply rooted in tradition and makes "Coming Home" without a doubt one of the top albums of 2015.
