About this album
Flex is a striking new wave debut that turned Lene Lovich into one of the most distinctive voices of the post-punk era. Released in 1980, the album blends pop, rock and synthesiser-driven artifice into songs that are quirky, dramatic and immediately memorable. Produced by Jacques Brel collaborator Les Chappell with Lovich as co-writer on much of the material, it showcases her elastic vocal style and a sharp sense of character, especially on songs such as “Bird Song” and “Lucky Number”’s era-defining singles companion pieces like “Say When”. Widely regarded as one of the more imaginative albums of the late new wave period, Flex helped establish Lovich as a cult figure with lasting influence.
