Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album is a hard rock landmark that expanded the band’s range without losing its power. Issued in 1971, it balanced heavy riffs and blues intensity with acoustic and folk-inflected writing, giving the group some of its most enduring songs in Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Stairway to Heaven and When the Levee Breaks. The record’s dynamic contrast and sheer musicianship helped define early-70s rock, while its commercial success and long critical reputation made it one of the most influential albums in the genre. Its mysterious presentation only added to the album’s myth.
