About this album
Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares (Volume 1) is a landmark recording of Bulgarian folk polyphony, bringing a fiercely distinctive choral tradition to international attention. Issued in 1975 and presented by Marcel Cellier, the album draws on regional folk repertoire shaped by layered voices, asymmetric rhythms and piercing harmonies that sound at once ancient and strikingly modern. Its performances helped define the group’s reputation beyond Bulgaria and influenced later interest in Eastern European vocal traditions. Revered by folk listeners and adventurous rock and world-music audiences alike, it remains one of the most recognisable introductions to the ensemble’s sound.
