Phoenix is a bold, adventurous statement from LaBelle, fusing funk, soul and disco into one of the group’s most ambitious albums. Issued in 1975, it showed Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash pushing well beyond their earlier pop-soul roots, with theatrical harmonies, elastic grooves and a tougher, more futuristic edge. The title suite and songs such as ‘Chances Go Round’ and ‘Cosmic Dancer’ underline the album’s wide-ranging vision, while its mix of streetwise grit and cosmic imagery helped make Phoenix a cult favourite and an important bridge between classic soul and the emerging disco era.
