King Creosote & Jon Hopkins' Diamond Mine is a 2011 collaboration that brought Fife songwriter Kenny Anderson and producer Jon Hopkins together for one of King Creosote's biggest critical successes, later earning a Mercury Prize nomination. Built from songs drawn from across two decades of Anderson's catalogue, it was recorded gradually over several years, without deadline pressure, and shaped into a compact 32-minute album intended to be heard as a single uninterrupted experience.
What makes Diamond Mine distinctive is the balance between intimate folk writing and Hopkins' patient electronic framing. Anderson's lyrics and vocals sit inside arrangements filled with piano, found sounds and small details from coastal life, reflecting his own description of the record as a soundtrack to a romanticised life in a Scottish seaside village. That setting matters: the album weaves in everyday textures and atmosphere without losing sight of the songs themselves.
The result is gentle on the surface but emotionally precise underneath. Tracks such as Bats in the Attic, Bubble and Your Young Voice show how the duo could make older King Creosote material feel newly suspended in air, turning familiar songwriting into something dreamlike, pastoral and quietly intense. For listeners who like the meeting point between modern folk and thoughtful electronica, this remains a beautifully self-contained record.
