Kikagaku Moyo – Kumoyo Island (2xLP)

Kikagaku Moyo's Kumoyo Island feels like a graceful closing chapter: the Japanese group's fifth album and final studio record, made after a decade of restless psychedelic exploration. Recorded back at Tsubame Studios in Tokyo, where their earliest material took shape, it arrived after lockdown paused the band's Amsterdam base and touring life, giving the five members unusual time to pull together demos and fragments into something more settled, reflective, and complete.

That sense of return matters to the music. Rather than stretching into long-form jams, Kumoyo Island often works through compact, carefully shaped pieces that still roam widely across styles. The album draws more directly on Japanese musical and literary tradition than much of the band's earlier work: opener “Monaka” takes melodic cues from minyo folk, while “Yayoi Iyayoi” is a rare performance in Japanese, using archaic language drawn from old poetry and nature books. Elsewhere, their version of Erasmos Carlos' “Meu Mar” carries a chain of translation from Portuguese into English and then Japanese, neatly matching the record's wider theme of movement between places and cultures.

Even as a farewell, this is not a retrospective or a victory lap. Contemporary reviews noted how naturally the band moved between cosmic funk, folk textures, garage-rock bite, ambient drift, and tightly detailed ensemble playing, with the songs feeling adventurous without losing their flow. For a band whose records often invited listeners into imagined spaces, Kumoyo Island lands as a particularly vivid one: less a final burst than a place to pause, look around, and hear just how far Kikagaku Moyo had travelled.
