About this album

You’ve Always Got the Blues pairs Kate Ceberano and Wendy Matthews in a striking roots-pop collaboration that highlights both singers’ expressive range. Issued in 1988, the album moves through blues, country and torch-song material with a warm, theatrical directness, finding drama in songs such as the title track, Guilty (Through Neglect) and Cry Me a River. Its blend of soundtrack-like atmosphere and classic balladry reflects the breadth of late-1980s Australian pop, while the duo’s contrasting voices give the record its appeal. As a meeting point between polished pop craft and old-school emotional delivery, it remains a notable side project for both artists.
