About this album
Straight Out the Jungle is a landmark debut that helped define the Jungle Brothers’ witty, Afrocentric strain of late-1980s hip-hop. Released in 1988, the album blends conscious lyrics, playful battle rhymes and sample-heavy boom-bap production at a moment when rap was rapidly expanding beyond its New York underground roots. The group’s easy chemistry and sharp wordplay made songs like “Straight Out the Jungle”, “Jimbrowski” and “Because I Got It Like That” stand out, while the record’s mix of humour, politics and club energy helped set the tone for Native Tongues-era alternative rap. It remains one of the genre’s most influential early statements.
