Released in 1980, it was recorded at Strawberry Studios with Martin Hannett’s distinctive production, which sharpened the cold basslines, hollowed-out drums and eerie space around Ian Curtis’s final lyrics. The album turned isolation, dread and exhaustion into something elemental, and songs such as Atrocity Exhibition, Isolation and Decades helped define the emotional and sonic reach of post-punk.
