Empty Bed Blues is a fine example of Josh White’s understated power as a singer, guitarist and interpreter of American roots music. Issued in 1962, it draws on blues, folk and gospel traditions, with White’s clear phrasing and fingerpicked guitar giving old songs renewed emotional force. Rather than relying on flash, he brings authority and restraint to material such as the title song, Backwater Blues and gospel standards like His Eye Is On The Sparrow. By this point White was already a respected figure in pre-war blues and folk revival circles, and this album reinforces why his performances remained so influential.
