The Hissing of Summer Lawns is one of Joni Mitchell’s most adventurous and original albums. Released in 1975, it pushed her songwriting beyond confessional folk into a sophisticated blend of jazz, rock and observational pop, with intricate arrangements and sharp lyrical detail. Tracks such as In France They Kiss On Main Street, The Jungle Line and Harry’s House/Centerpiece show Mitchell widening her palette while keeping her distinctive voice and guitar at the centre. Often seen as a key step in her artistic evolution, the album helped define the ambitious mid-1970s phase of her career and remains one of her most closely studied records.
