Joni Mitchell's Song To A Seagull introduced her as a recording artist in March 1968, after other singers had already helped carry her songs into the wider folk world. Produced by David Crosby, the album is a striking debut: sparse in arrangement, but already full of the dense writing and unusual harmonic turns that would define Mitchell's catalogue. Its original structure matters too, with one side framed around city life and the other turning toward the seaside and the natural world.

What makes this record so rewarding is how much of Mitchell is already here. Songs such as “I Had A King” and “Nathan La Franeer” sketch bruised, sharply observed characters, while “Michael From Mountains” and “Cactus Tree” show how conversational her writing could be without losing poetic weight. Even at this early stage, she was stretching beyond straightforward folk, with hints of classical shape in the melodies and chord changes.

This edition draws on the 2021 remaster, with the album newly remastered by Bernie Grundman under Mitchell's supervision and the original mix revisited by Mitchell with mixer Matt Lee. For a debut sometimes overshadowed by the records that followed, it stands as a clear first statement: intimate, literate, and already unmistakably Joni Mitchell.
