Johnny Marr – The Age Of Everything (lp)

Johnny Marr's The Age of Everything is his fifth solo studio album, written in London, developed on tour across the East Coast of North America, and recorded in Marr's hometown of Manchester. That movement between cities suits a record shaped by modern overload: Marr has described the title as a way of summing up the sense of cultural overwhelm brought on by technology, while still leaving room for possibility rather than simple pessimism.

The album also sounds like a deliberate statement of where Marr is in 2026. Across 10 songs, he channels the pace and tension of city life into sharp, urgent guitar pop, with tracks such as “Spin” and “That Feeling” pointing to the record's brisk, melodic pull. The material was road-tested before release, which helps explain the directness and momentum running through these songs.

What comes through most clearly is Marr's continued confidence as a songwriter outside his work with The Smiths. The Age of Everything leans into the qualities that have long defined his music - bright guitar lines, melodic precision, and an ear for songs that feel immediate without giving up subtlety. For anyone who has followed his solo catalogue from The Messenger onward, this feels like another purposeful step forward rather than a nostalgic retread.
