Johnny Cash At San Quentin is an LP by Johnny Cash from 1969 released on the CBS label.
About this album
Johnny Cash At San Quentin is a searing live statement and one of the defining prison concert albums of the late 1960s. Recorded at San Quentin State Prison in 1969, it captures Cash at a moment when his outlaw image, empathetic songwriting and deep rapport with inmates had become inseparable. Backed by the Tennessee Three and joined by June Carter Cash, he moves between hard-edged staples such as Folsom Prison Blues and San Quentin and crowd favourites including A Boy Named Sue, with the audience’s reaction becoming part of the drama. The album helped cement Cash’s status as a country icon whose live performances could feel both confrontational and compassionate.
