John Prine – Found Dogs

John Prine's Found Dogs is a newly curated archival release built from the 1993 sessions and demos that eventually led to 1995's Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings, an album that arrived during a strong mid-career stretch for Prine and earned a Grammy nomination. Issued to mark that record's 30th anniversary, this set opens a more informal window onto the material, with alternate versions, acoustic performances and demo recordings that show how Prine's songs took shape before the finished album.

What makes Found Dogs especially appealing is how clearly it brings Prine's writing process into view without reducing the songs to sketches. There are alternate takes of "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody" and "Quit Hollerin' at Me," a demo of "Lake Marie," and a solo acoustic reading of "Humidity Built the Snowman," each one sharpening the dry wit and plainspoken craft that run through this period of his catalogue. The set also adds five previously unreleased tracks, including "World Without Love" and "Dogs in Burlington," plus a Johnny Horton cover that suits Prine's affection for sturdy, unfussy song forms.

Rather than treating these recordings as leftovers, Found Dogs works best as a companion to one of Prine's most characterful '90s albums: intimate, unvarnished and full of the warmth that kept his storytelling so durable. Newly remastered for vinyl, it offers longtime listeners a closer look at a pivotal chapter in his studio work.
