Later Than You Think is the sixth studio album by John Maus, released in September 2025 on the Young label. The record falls into synth-pop, experimental electronic and indie, combining Maus’s trademark retro synth textures with ambitious themes of grief, rebirth, justice and transformation. Written and recorded in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri, it features 16 tracks including Because We Built It, I Hate Antichrist, Out Of Time and Pick Me Up. The album is described as an attempt at “aural metaphysics,” where spiritual struggle, personal confession and philosophical ideas collide with sound.
Musically, Later Than You Think moves between minimal and maximal, sparse melodies and dense arrangements, pairing simple pop harmonies with counterpoint and layered electronic atmospheres. It captures both Maus’s academic background in composition and his cult reputation for dark, emotive synth-pop. The result is an album that feels urgent and deeply personal, exploring sacred and profane elements while pushing his sound further than before.
