Solid Air is John Martyn’s landmark 1973 album, and one of the key British folk-rock records of the decade. Written and recorded during a period of deep personal and musical change, it balances intimate songwriting with loose, exploratory playing, drawing on folk, jazz and blues without losing its pastoral core. The title track, written for Nick Drake, became one of Martyn’s defining songs, while “May You Never” gave the album a lasting place in his catalogue. Produced by Chris Blackwell and Jonathan Miller, Solid Air helped establish Martyn as a singular voice: reflective, adventurous and capable of turning confessional writing into something quietly expansive.
