The album *Grace and Danger*, released in October 1980, is widely regarded as one of John Martyn’s most personal and emotionally candid albums—this reissue on 180-gram vinyl is a faithful reproduction of the original Island UK pressing.
Written and recorded during the breakdown of his marriage to musician Beverley Martyn, the album captures a period of deep heartache, uncertainty, and self-reflection in Martyn’s life. Its strongly autobiographical nature was so striking that Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, delayed its release by more than a year, as he reportedly found the material too painful and disturbing. Martyn later described it as “the most concrete autobiographical work” he had ever written.
Musically, “Grace and Danger” builds on the atmospheric fusion of folk, jazz, rock, and reggae influences that characterized Martyn’s work in the late 1970s, while placing a stronger emphasis on incisive songwriting and emotional directness. The album features notable contributions from drummer and backup singer Phil Collins, whose sensitive playing complements Martyn’s expressive guitar work and distinctive vocals. Songs such as “Sweet Little Mystery,” “Hurt in Your Heart,” “Baby Please Come Home,” and the title track address themes like love, loss, regret, and longing with remarkable honesty.
