John David Souther – Black Rose (2xLP, 45RPM, Acoustic Sounds 40 Series)

John David Souther's Black Rose arrived in 1976, right in the thick of the Southern California singer-songwriter boom, and it shows how naturally Souther could move inside that world while giving it a more finely arranged, introspective edge. This was his second solo album, produced by Peter Asher, with orchestral arrangements by David Campbell, and it brings together country-rock warmth, subtle jazz and pop touches, and the kind of studio polish that made mid-'70s Asylum records so inviting.

What makes Black Rose especially rewarding is the cast around Souther and the way their contributions serve the songs rather than overwhelm them.
