About this album
American Fool is the breakthrough album that turned John Cougar Mellencamp into a mainstream star. Released in 1982, it sharpened his blend of rock & roll grit, pop hooks and working-class storytelling into a sound that connected far beyond the Midwest. Powered by the hit singles Hurts So Good and Jack and Diane, the album spent weeks at the top of the US charts and became one of the defining heartland rock records of the early 1980s. Its plainspoken lyrics and radio-ready choruses helped establish Mellencamp as a major American songwriter with lasting commercial and cultural impact.
