John Coltrane – The Tiberi Tapes (4xLP, Verve Box Set)

John Coltrane's The Tiberi Tapes opens a remarkable window onto his club work in New York and Philadelphia between 1960 and 1964, drawn from private reel-to-reel recordings made by saxophonist Frank Tiberi. Long circulated more as jazz-world rumour than release, these performances come from a crucial stretch in Coltrane's development, with the bandstand serving as his real laboratory. The rough, close-up sound is part of the point: this is Coltrane testing ideas in public, not preserving them in studio conditions.

The set traces that restless movement across several line-ups, from early 1960 readings of Giant Steps with McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Pete La Roca to later performances with Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison and, on key selections, Eric Dolphy. You can hear repertoire expanding along with the group language: the modal reach of Impressions, the open-ended momentum of Satellite, and a live Resolution from 1964 that places Coltrane's quartet just before and around one of the defining periods of his career. More than a cache of curiosities, this is a vivid document of how his music changed shape onstage.

What makes The Tiberi Tapes especially compelling is that Tiberi originally made the recordings as study material, trying to understand Coltrane's harmonic thinking from inside the room. Heard now, more than sixty years later, they preserve not just rare performances but the working process behind them: repetition, extension, risk, and the sheer discipline of a band pushing every tune further than the last.
