    Sun Ship is a fierce late-period John Coltrane set that distils his move from post-bop into freer, more searching terrain. Recorded in 1965 but not issued until 1971, the album documents a transitional moment with Coltrane’s classic quartet in full flight, balancing urgency, abstraction and deep spiritual intensity. Built around the title track, Dearly Beloved, Amen, Attaining and Ascent, it shows Coltrane pushing harmony and form without losing emotional focus. Widely regarded as part of the essential late Coltrane canon, it remains a key listening point for understanding how jazz opened towards avant-garde expression in the 1960s.
