John Coltrane - Meditations

John Coltrane's Meditations catches him at a genuine turning point. Recorded on November 23, 1965 and released by Impulse! in 1966, it documents the moment Coltrane pushed beyond the language of his classic quartet toward the freer, more spiritually charged sound that defined his final years. That tension is part of what makes the album so compelling: McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones are still here, but the group is expanded by Pharoah Sanders and a second drummer, Rashied Ali.

The result is a suite-like record that feels both structured and volatile. Pieces such as The Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, Compassion and Love move as a sustained meditation on transcendence and collective expression, with dense ensemble textures, fierce improvisation and moments of sudden calm.
