John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman's John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman captures a singular meeting in 1963, when Coltrane set aside intensity for an all-ballads session and found an ideal partner in Hartman's deep baritone. Recorded on March 7, 1963 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs for Impulse!, it stands as one of the three ballad-focused albums Coltrane made around late 1962 and early 1963, and it was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013.

Hartman was apparently Coltrane's own choice, and the pairing gives standards such as My One and Only Love and Lush Life unusual weight and calm.
