Impressions is an LP by John Coltrane from 1980 released on the MCA Impulse! label.

About this album

Impressions is a vital John Coltrane release, showing his quartet and expanded groups pushing beyond hard bop into modal and freer post-bop terrain. Issued in 1963, it draws together performances such as the title track, ‘India’ and ‘After The Rain’, where Coltrane’s soprano and tenor playing turns restless invention into a larger emotional and spiritual search. The album reflects the period in which he was stretching jazz harmony, form and ensemble interaction with increasing freedom, helping define the direction of modern jazz in the early 1960s. Its blend of intensity, discipline and risk makes it one of the key documents of Coltrane’s creative peak.
