Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album is a revelatory John Coltrane archive release, offering a vivid glimpse of his classic 1963 quartet in transition. Recorded with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, the session sits between the hard-driving modal language of the early 1960s and the freer direction Coltrane would soon pursue. Issued in 2018 after the tapes resurfaced, it was hailed as an essential addition to his catalogue, not a curiosity. The performances on pieces such as "Nature Boy", "Impressions" and "One Up, One Down" show Coltrane testing ideas with urgency, invention and remarkable group chemistry.
