Blue Train is John Coltrane’s hard bop masterpiece, and one of the essential post-war jazz albums. Recorded in 1957 and released in 1958 on Blue Note, it captures Coltrane in peak form alongside Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The title track, “Moment’s Notice” and “Lazy Bird” showcase the harmonic drive, precision and intensity that became central to Coltrane’s voice, while the album’s compact, blues-rooted arrangements keep the performances sharply focused. Widely regarded as a Blue Note classic, it helped cement Coltrane’s reputation as a leading innovator in modern jazz.
