John Coltrane's Ascension (Edition I & II) captures the 1965 session that pushed him decisively into the avant-garde, before arriving on Impulse! in 1966 as one of the defining statements of free jazz. Built as a nearly 40-minute large-ensemble piece, it brings together an 11-player group including Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, John Tchicai, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Art Davis and Elvin Jones.
