The project grew from a dream Carpenter had in 2024, about murder, catacombs and a supernatural force beneath downtown Los Angeles, and that origin gives the record a clear narrative pull from the outset.

What makes Cathedral especially interesting in Carpenter's catalogue is the shift away from the imagined-film approach of the Lost Themes records toward something heavier and more explicitly story-driven. The familiar Carpenter atmosphere is still here in the synth textures and tension-building motifs, but Daniel Davies' guitar takes the music into darker, riff-led territory closer to heavy metal and hard rock. Tracks such as Primeval, Abandoned Cathedral and Lord of the Underground suggest that balance between cinematic pacing and full-bodied album drama.
