Slow Dazzle is one of John Cale’s sharpest solo statements, turning his art-rock instincts into taut, bruised rock songs with real bite. Released in 1975, the album followed the success of Paris 1919 and showed a darker, rougher side of Cale’s range, balancing tuneful songwriting with abrasive wit and nervous energy. The record moves between barbed rockers and more haunted material, with songs such as Mr. Wilson, Darling I Need You and Heartbreak Hotel reflecting his gift for mixing melody, irony and unease. It is widely regarded as a key album in Cale’s 1970s catalogue and a strong example of his restless experimentation.
