About this album
Virtuoso is the album that confirmed Joe Pass as one of jazz guitar’s supreme solo voices. Recorded in 1973 and released in 1974, it presents him completely unaccompanied, turning standards and blues into fluid, harmonically rich performances that never feel exposed. Pass brings bop logic and cool, lyrical poise to songs such as Night and Day, Stella by Starlight and ’Round Midnight, while his effortless time, chordal invention and melodic invention make the record a masterclass in solo jazz guitar. Widely regarded as a defining statement, it remains one of the most admired albums in his catalogue.
