About this album
Sheffield Steel is a strong comeback album that found Joe Cocker sounding revitalised and more focused. Released in 1982, it was produced by Chris Blackwell and recorded at Compass Point in Nassau, where Cocker worked with a tight, rootsy band and a cleaner, harder-edged sound than much of his 1970s work. The album blends rock, soul and reggae influences with an assured vocal performance that reasserted his reputation after a patchy late-70s period. Highlights such as Many Rivers To Cross and Seven Days underline both his grit and his gift for reinterpreting songs with real emotional weight, making the record one of his most respected 1980s releases.
