About this album

The Shouting Stage shows Joan Armatrading refining her pop-rock craft into a sharper, more insistent form. Issued in 1988, the album pairs her distinctive voice and close-range storytelling with stronger rhythmic drive and streamlined arrangements, bringing a tougher edge to songs such as The Devil I Know and All A Woman Needs. By this point, Armatrading had already established herself as one of Britain’s most singular singer-songwriters, and this record underlines how effectively she could balance emotional candour with accessible hooks. It is a confident late-1980s statement from an artist who consistently wrote from her own perspective while keeping the music immediate and direct.
