J.J. Cale – Grasshopper (VG+/VG+) – LP, AU 1982

Grasshopper is an LP by J.J. Cale from 1982 released on the Mercury label.

About this album

Grasshopper finds J.J. Cale sharpening the understated style that made him such a distinctive songwriter. Issued in 1982, the album folds blues rock, country rock and loose-limbed groove into songs that sound effortless but are tightly controlled beneath the surface. Cale’s clipped guitar lines, murmured vocal delivery and unflashy arrangements keep the focus on feel rather than display, while tracks such as One Step Ahead of the Blues and Downtown L.A. underline his gift for sly, economical writing. Coming after his influential 1970s run, Grasshopper confirms why Cale remained such a touchstone for roots musicians and rock peers alike.
