Issued in 1972, the album draws on West Coast and European performances, mixing standards such as Johnny B. Goode and Blue Suede Shoes with extended takes on Voodoo Chile, Little Wing and Red House. Rather than a tidy greatest-hits live set, it shows Hendrix using the stage as a laboratory for improvisation, tone and volume. The result is one of the more revealing posthumous Hendrix releases, underlining both his command of the blues and his role in shaping psychedelic rock.
