About this album
Stand Up is the album where Jethro Tull’s identity fully snapped into focus. Released in 1969, it turned the band from promising blues-rock contenders into a more individual force, with Ian Anderson’s sharp vocals, acoustic colouring and flute now central to the sound. The record mixes folk-rock detail with harder-edged riffs and the beginnings of the prog sensibility that would define much of Tull’s early work. Key pieces such as ‘A New Day Yesterday’, ‘Bourée’ and ‘Nothing Is Easy’ helped establish the group’s reputation for restless arrangements and musical dexterity, making Stand Up an important step in British rock’s late-’60s expansion.
