Benefit shows Jethro Tull refining the mix of folk-rock colour and progressive ambition that defined their early peak. Issued in 1970, the record followed the success of Stand Up and pushed Ian Anderson’s songwriting towards tougher, more intricate arrangements while keeping the band’s acoustic and electric contrasts front and centre. The album is marked by a more self-contained studio identity, with Martin Barre’s guitar adding bite beside Anderson’s flute and distinctive vocal phrasing. Songs such as With You There to Help Me and To Cry You a Song helped establish Benefit as one of the key steps in Tull’s rapid development during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
